Referee Coaching

There are two Referee Coaching courses available:

 

Level 1 Referee Coaching Course

This course provides participants with information and methodologies that will assist them to commence their referee coaching career. The course takes you step by step through the process that is followed in having two-way discussions with referees on performance and realising potential.

The program covers:

  • An introduction and overview of referee coaching and the relationship that needs to be developed between a Referee Coach and a Referee
  • Communication Skills required by Referee Coaches
  • Observation skills for Referee Coaches
  • Information on current refereeing and playing trends

An additional component is the “ARU Competency Assessment” course, which is held on the same weekend as the Level 1 Referee Coach course. Coaches who would be expected by their associations to perform competency assessments (ie field tests for accreditation purposes) will need to complete this component, for all others the session is voluntary and not recommended. Participants who already hold a Cert. IV in Workplace Assessment and Training need not attend.

Does the course incorporate SmartRugby?

No.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is aimed at anyone how is interested in coaching other referees – be they young senior referees looking to help out schools and district associations, or older district and adult referees looking to move into a different stage of their career.

What are the prerequisites?

You must be SmartRugby compliant.

Whilst current referee accreditation is desirable, it is not necessary if you have a good knowledge of the modern game and the way it is played.

What is the minimum age?

19 years old.

What resources will be provided?

All participants will receive:

  • a Participant Workbook
  • a 2006/07 Laws Book (if not already owned)
  • a “Refereeing in Practice” booklet (if not already owned)
  • a “Referee Coaching in Practice” booklet (if not already owned)
  • Match Information Forms
  • Match Statistics Forms
  • Referee Coaching Report Forms
  • Game Management Guidelines
  • IRB Communication Protocol
  • ARU Assessor Training Learner Guide (Assessor component only)

How long is the course?

Approx. 8 hours. (Assessor component additional hours on a second day).

What should I bring?

The course is conducted indoors, so please bring paper and a pen.

Lunch will be provided.

What is the course cost?

$66. This amount will be refunded upon request if the participant goes on to complete their accreditation.

Level 2 Referee Coaching Course

This course is a continuation from the Level 1 Referee Coach and takes the referee coach education to a higher degree of learning. It is designed to equip participants to referee coach at Premiership grade level.

The program covers:

  • An overview of the tools available for Referee Coaching at the next level
  • Understanding the Athlete (Referee) and goal settingDeveloping relationships with
  • Referees and player coaches and negotiation practices
  • Advanced Communication and Observation skills for Referee Coaches
  • Developing the coaching advice
  • Information on current refereeing and playing trends

The course incorporates attendance at a Tooheys New Shute Shield Premiership fixture in Sydney.

Does the course incorporate SmartRugby?

No.

Who is the course aimed at?

Referee Coaches in Sydney or country zones who have been coaching for 2-3 years and are moving towards working with more experienced referees. Referee coaches with NSWRRA are expected to complete this course in their first year on the coaching panel.

What are the prerequisites?

You must be:
a current Level 1 accredited referee coach
SmartRugby compliant

How long is the course?

Course work is 16 hours, conducted over 3 days (a Friday evening, Saturday morning and all day Sunday). Additionally, Saturday afternoon is spent at a Tooheys New Shute Shield Premiership fixture in Sydney.
