Level 2 Referee Course

The aim of this course is to provide participants with information and methodologies that will assist in taking their refereeing to the next level. The program focuses on the application of the Law, rather than the Law itself, as well as practical aspects of refereeing that will provide improved management skills.

The program covers:

  • Effective refereeing
    A broad overview of referees appraisal and coaching, goal setting, self analysis and understanding your personality,
  • Game management issues
    On-field communication and positioning, relationships with captains and coaches, managing foul play and game understanding,
  • Advantage
  • Game elements
    Tackle, Ruck, Maul, Lineout, Scrum, general Play and Restarts
  • Game knowledge
    Current playing and coaching trends

Any referee who considers that he/she has the capability to reach the more senior referee ranks must complete this course in order that he/she can be appointed at a commensurate level.

Does the course incorporate SmartRugby?

No.

Who is the course aimed at?

Primarily aspirational referees who are new to refereeing senior rugby, but also current senior rugby referees looking to improve their understanding of the game and referee management techniques.

The course is also suitable for experienced referees of junior age groups who are looking to eventually move into referee coaching.

What are the prerequisites?

You must be:

  • a current Level 1 accredited referee
  • SmartRugby compliant

You should also be either currently refereeing senior rugby, or be a referee of junior rugby with at least five years experience.

In order to gain Level 2 Referee accreditation, you will need to obtain a Level 2 Touch Judge accreditations. This is not a prerequisite, though, and can be done sometime after attending the Level 2 Referee course.

What is the minimum age?

19 years old.

What resources will be provided?

All participants will receive:

  • a Level 2 Participant Workbook
  • a “Refereeing in Practice” booklet
  • a “Referee Coaching in Practice” booklet
  • Game Management Guidelines for 2007
  • IRB Communications Protocol
  • Level 2 Competency Assessment Manual (upon request)

How long is the course?

The course is 16 hours, conducted over 2 or 3 days, usually a full Saturday and Sunday or a Friday evening, Saturday morning and all day Sunday.

What should I bring?

The course is primarily conducted indoors, but contains some outdoor elements, so sports gear is recommended. Please also bring sunscreen, water, a hat, paper and a pen.
